What is Trizza & Lizzu?

Trizza & Lizzu is a craftsmanship laboratory located in the historic center of Erice. It is one of those laboratory in which it is still possible today to hear the ancient and original wood looms used to create the traditional carpets from Erice.

Where does the idea of Trizza & Lizzu come from?

The idea of Trizza & Lizzu was born for fun. Some years ago, I decided to amuse myself at the loom, but in a second moment I realized that that could have become also a proper job.

What brings nowadays a young person to dedicate himself to the craftsmanship?

What brought me to dedicate myself to this type of craftsmanship is mainly the belonging to one of those families that has always been involved with it – for work but also for passion – and that is one of the few realities still alive. My strong bond has then a lot to do with this experience, as well as with my family, my homeland and its beautiful traditions.

Which incentives and resources do you think companies need to have to work in such a traditional sector like the one of craftsmanship?

A company that today decides to operate in a traditional sector needs to have lot of courage – also considering the historic period in which we are living – but most of all it needs to have tenacity, desire to work and fantasy.

To be honest, I do not really see any difference form how it is today. Maybe with some other young person that follows me… who knows!?!

Working in Sicily: which are the obstacles and the advantages that you find on the territory?

There are difficulties linked to the bureaucracy for sure, about accessing financing, fiscal pressure, the lack of attention for the subsidies in hiring and so on… All the things that we know very well. A positive aspect relies for me in producing and selling a typical product in a land that already sells itself pretty well through its seaside sunsets!

Sicily & Sicilians is a project about the promotion of Sicilian excellences through art, what do you think are the sectors on which today the island can bet? Which are the strategies to focus on?

For sure the sector on which it is possible to bet, if it can be defined as such, is the “typical” one under all the different aspects: from the food and wine that all the world envies, to the manufacturing products, passing through the huge natural, landscape and historic-cultural heritage. About the strategies, well I consider a simple one: authenticity!

We would like to thank the young Sicilian Sergio La Sala for this interview, if you want to know more about his creations, you can find the contacts on the website of Trizza & Lizzu.
