The Mediterranean island of Lampedusa belongs to Italy, Sicily and is the largest of the Pelagie Islands. This island, nearer to Africa than Europe, is part of the African continental shelf, and the fauna and flora of Lampedusa are similar to those of North Africa.
Lampedusa is famous all over the world because of its wonderful beaches and reefs, for its typical vegetation and its rich fauna. The “beach of Rabbit” is one of the most charming corners of the Sicily and of the Mediterranean sea, thanks to its beauty of the land and of the crystal clear sea.
The Isola dei Conigli (literally ‘Island of Rabbits’), which is close to the south coast of Lampedusa, is one of the last remaining egg-laying sites in Italy for the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, which is endangered throughout the Mediterranean. On the island there is a natural reserve, that include the beach of rabbits and the surrounding reef.
In about four hours you can do the complete tour of the island. Leaving from the little harbour and going ahead toward the western side, you can find amazing seasides , some notched and not easily accessible, but really marvellous. The reef is rich of secret creeks in which the water creates great suggestions playing with the light.
